Archery Contests at Schutzenfest

• Schutzenkonig. The overall individual winner will be awarded the title Schutzenkonig, or "King of the Shooters". You must do well in both garb and shooting ability. The winner of the title recieves a travelling necklace of medallions to be worn until the next Schutzenfest. The garb will be judged by the attending royalty during the noontime parade.

See the list of shoots planned.

Team contests

• Based upon skill and appearance
• Best Feast table set up (feast gear, linens, candles, etc.)

Youth archery

• Thanks to Lady Christina Walker of Penrose, we will have a separate area youths. We will try to have beginner's equipment available, but don't rely upon it.

Adult Beginners

• Adults wishing to try archery for the first time should inquire at the archery list table for the availability of a class.

Thrown Weapons

• We will have a line for thrown weapons (knives, hatchets, etc) run by Lord Richard of the Mountain. He has indicated that there will be practice time in the morning, and that there'll be an adult and a youth tournament in the afternoon. If time permits, there'll be a novelty shoot throwing at an effigy provided by Baron 'foro.

Crossbows

• Crossbows are encouraged to compete along with bows in all shoots. They will not be scored differently. The relative strengths and weaknesses will (we feel) even themselves out. Back to Schutzenfest page.

Shoots

I cannot guarantee that all of the following shoots will be completed in the time allowed. Please, please PLEASE do not "wait until my favourite is up" before shooting. There will be no guarantee that your favorite will even come up, or will be workable.

Scoring

The scoring for Schutzenkoenig will proceed as follows; the ideal score for a given shoot will be computed. Your actual score will be divided by the ideal score and multiplied by 100, giving a percentage of the ideal score. The percentage is then multiplied by the weighting factor for each shoot, and then summed for all of the shoots. The garb will be judged by their Highnesses on a scale of 1 to 10 (everyone COULD get a 10!) and factored in with a weight of 10%.

Team scores will take the scores of the individual team members and sum them. Highest team score wins.

• IKAC (Inter Kingdom Archery Contest standard shoot) (NOTE: This shoot is required for Schutzenkoenig competition and carries a weight of 30%.)
• Dresden Bird - A bird effigy is placed on the top of a pole, and the archers shoot from near the base of the pole. (NOTE: This shoot is required for Schutzenkoenig competition and carries a weight of 20%.)
• War Door Shoot - An archer is huddled behind a War Door (the big shields used at wars for holding the line, and in the campground as a wall of a shower) and is given 5 seconds to leap from behind, loose two arrows and leap back and become FULLY COVERED by the war door
• Wreath Shoot - A series of different diameter wreaths are set up. You get positive points for shooting completely within the wreath (more points for the smaller wreaths), zero points if any part of your shaft is touching the wreath, and negative points if your shaft is outside of the wreath.
• Reverse Scoring - Standard circle target, but the points have been reversed. It's surprising how difficult it is to get a high score. (NOTE: This shoot is required for Schutzenkoenig competition and carries a weight of 20%.)
• Advancing Man - Two variations on this: (1)Traditional: Like you see at Pennsic, where everyone lines up, and there are a series of targets next to each other, but 5 yards closer. Everyone starts loosing their arrows at the furthest target, and the marshal will call successively closer targets as time goes by. You get higher scores for the further targets, but negative points for targets hit after moving on to the next closer target. (2)Experimental: Have a target mounted on a wagon or sled, with a rope running through a pulley at the archer's feet, and on through another pulley as far from the archer as the target is, to a harness worn by a fighter standing over the pulley. When the command to shoot is given, the fighter starts running towards the archer, pulling the target closer to the archer as well. The archer has until the fighter rings a bell set up near the archer to loose arrows.
• Castle Defender Shoot - A cutaway portion of a castle tower, with an arrow slit facing the targets, is set up for the archer to stand in a loose arrows in a timed event.
• Castle Attacker Shoot - Take the castle cutaway used in the castle shoot (with slanted walls and turn it around. Put the target in the castle and the archer shoots at the target.
• Clout Shoot - LOOONG shoot (75 - 80 yards). Longfellow stuff ("I shot an arrow into the air, where it fell had better be in the middle of the target">) (NOTE: This shoot is required for Schutzenkoenig competition and carries a weight of 20%.)
