SMTP Authentication

Here are the instructions to add or disable SMTP AUTHentication for the most popular mail reader packages. Please email us at support@skypoint.com if you have questions.

Outlook Express

This feature is easily turned on or off in Outlook Express.

Select the 'Tools' menu item.
In the 'accounts' tab, select your mail account item
Select 'properties'.

Select the tab titled 'Servers'.
At the bottom of this tab is an option 'My server requires authentication'.
To use this option, check this box, to NOT use it, uncheck it.

If you have checked the box:
Select 'Settings'
Make sure that 'Logon using' is selected and enter your username and
password in the box. Do not use the '@skypoint.com' part!
Also check the 'Remember Password' option if you'd like.

Netscape Messenger 4.73-4.78

Netscape, on the other hand, does not implement this very well. If you are having troubles with authentication ALWAYS asking for passwords, etc, see the below instructions to turn off the option or how to set it up.

To setup or disable SMTP Authentication in Netscape Messenger 4.7.x
-------------------------------------------------------------------

These instructions assume that you have previously configured the
Messenger component of your Netscape 4.7.x installation to work with
Skypoint's e-mail system.

If you have not already done so, instructions are available at
http://www.netscape.com.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you choose to use SMTP AUTH in Netscape 4.7.x, you will be prompted for
a password twice: once upon login, and an additional time when you send
your first message. All subsequent mails in the same session will be sent
without a prompt.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Follow these steps to enable SMTP Authentication in Netscape 4.7.x:
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Start the Netscape 4.7.x application.
Select Preferences from the Edit menu. The Preferences window should
  appear.
Click the plus symbol ( + ) next to the words "Mail & Newsgroups" to
  expand the sub-menu.
Select "Mail Servers" from the expanded list.
Enter your username in the text box labeled "Outgoing mail server user
name." Do not enter the '@skypoint.com' part, just the username.
Click the radio button labeled "If Possible" under the heading "Use Secure
SocketLayer (SSL) or TLS for outgoing messages."
Click OK.

Close the Netscape application completely. The next message you send via
Netscape 4.7.x will use SMTP AUTH to protect your password and messages
  as they traverse the network.

Some users find the need to authenticate twice to use SMTP AUTH irritating.
In this case, it is possible to disable SMTP AUTH. See following instructions.

Netscape Messenger 6.x, 7.x, Mozilla 1.x

These instructions assume that you have previously configured the mail and
newsgroup component of your Netscape or Mozilla installation to work with
Skypoint's e-mail system. Instructions to setup your Messenger client on
Netscape can be found at http://www.netscape.com.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you choose to use SMTP AUTH in Netscape 6.x, 7.x, or Mozilla 1.x you
will be prompted for a password twice: once upon login, and an additional
time when you send your first message. All subsequent mails will be sent
without a prompt.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Follow these steps to enable SMTP Authentication in Netscape 6.x, 7.x, or
Mozilla 1.x:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Start the application.
Select "Mail and Newsgroups" from one of the following:
the Tasks menu in Netscape 6.x
the Window menu in Netscape 7.x or Mozilla 1.x.

Enter your password if prompted. The Mail and Newsgroups window should appear.
Select "Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings" from the Edit menu. The Mail
and Newsgroup Account Settings window should appear.

Click "Outgoing Server (SMTP)."
Click the box labeled "Use name and password" so that a check mark appears.
Type your username in the "User Name" text box. Do not enter the
  '@skypoint.com' part.

Click the radio button labeled "When Available" under the heading "Use
  Secure Connection (SSL)."

Click OK to close the Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings window.

Close the application completely. The next message you send will use SMTP
AUTH to protect your password and messages as they traverse the network.

When you enter your password, you can check the box to have Netscape
remember your password for future runs using the 'Password Manager'

Disabling SMTP AUTH in Netscape Messenger 4.73-4.78, 6.x, 7.x

Sometimes it might be undesireable to have Netscape ask your password
every time you run Netscape and send mail. Netscape does not have an
option to easily turn off SMTP AUTH. If the server, like Skypoint's does
allow AUTH, then Netscape will use it. Netscape does have an option to
disable it, but it is hidden.

Follow these steps to disable SMTP AUTH in Netscape:

Close all instances of the Netscape application.
Using a text editor, open the "prefs.js" file in your Netscape profile
directory. The location of the Netscape profile directory may vary from
computer to computer, but is typically similar to this based upon
  version:

   4.73-4.78
	C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\

where can be replaced by your Netscape user name.

   6.x,7.x
        C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\defaults\pref

where C:\Program Files\Netscape\ can be replaced by your location of
     Netscape.

If you cannot find it directly, you can user Start>Search for files and
look directly for prefs.js. You will find these somewhere under the path
that Netscape is installed into. DO NOT CHANGE ANY *NOT* UNDER THE
NETSCAPE LOCATION ON YOUR SYSTEM!

Add the following line to the "prefs.js" file:

	user_pref("mail.auth_login", false);

Note: The "prefs.js" file might contain a warning that states not to the
edit the file by hand. Disregard this warning.

Close the text editor and save the "prefs.js" file.

Start the Netscape application. You will not be prompted to enter a
  password when sending mail.

However, you will not be able to send mail through Skypoint's mail servers if
your computer is located off our network without prior approval for
this access. This would be most apparent when you dial in to another
ISP while roaming with a laptop, etc.

To re-enable SMTP AUTH, repeat the above procedure, but remove rather than
add the line indicated in above.
