Catherine was born about 1821 in Monmouthshire, Wales, daughter of John Evans.

She was married on Jun 30, 1838 to William Matthews at St Peter's Church, Blaina, Monmouthshire, and their marriage is recorded in the June quarter of 1838 in the Aberystruth register. Catherine signed her name with an X and probably could not read or write.

Catherine died in 1888, and was first buried in Eynon in Lackawanna County, but was later buried at Springbrook Cemetery in Spring Brook Township, in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.
