Catharine Matthews
(1856 - 1939)

Catharine was born 4 September 1856 in Prompton, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, and was named after her family's daughter Catharine who died at age 2 on the voyage to America. She was also known as Aunt Cassie and "Two Mama", a name she acquired from a granddaughter who said she was "Mama, too."

In 1860, she appears to be in Dyberry Township, Wayne County, in the home of John Bates. Her age is '57', surely an error, it should be 4 or maybe 5. No other Catharine Mathews is in the township except her mother.

In 1870 she lived at home in Spring Brook Township, then Luzerne County.

Catharine was married on 24 December 1873 to John R. Thomas, who was born 5 September 1847 in Wales, and died 28 April 1889.

In 1880 she and John lived in Spring Brook Township, now Lackawanna County.

In 1900 Catharine was living 2 doors from brother Samuel in Olyphant, Lackawanna County, with daughter Georgia.

In 1910 she lived in Spring Brook Township, and was the postmistress. Her niece Nellie aged 20 lived with her.

No information was found in the 1920 census for her.

In 1930 Catharine lived by herself in Spring Brook.

Catharine died 18 January 1939, in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
