Jeff, I don't think you were there after class yesterday, but Brad
Hokanson came up and introduced himself to me (because I was someone
approaching his own age!), and wanted to know if we might want him on
our project team.

I was able to find two web pages that seem to deal with him (or somebody
else named Brad Hokanson):
http://www.ifi.uib.no/cce/institute/stud/bradh.html and
http://dha.che.umn.edu/Hokanson/Hokanson.html

Personally, I think having a design person on the team might be useful.
(Otherwise we are all pretty much CSci-type people, as near as I can
tell.)

Having a fifth person complicates things, but might get us a better
project outcome.

What do you people think?

(I'll be updating http://www.skypoint.com/members/escargo/csci5110.htm
tonight.)

I personally think it would be a great idea. The professor said that
he would allow groups of 4 to pick up one of the non-csci people as a
fifth if I recall correctly. This should not be a problem unless it
makes meetings nearly impossible. A little different viewpoint usually
helps a design type project.

Yep, got it. Now I set up an alias, so hopefully I wont miss it again.
I forwarded him a copy to the correct address.

The mail list thing is still a good idea though.
What name should we give it?

fantastic4 #Will we have 5 soon?
cargo-net #Small network involving D. Cargo
furps #Name borrowed from last quaerter's soft.
	    #engineering group. Borrowed from HP
Functionality, Usability, Reliability, Performance, Supportability

furps2 #Just so the name doesn't hex the project.
bob #a name my co-worker names just about anything.

That's all I can think of for now.

Personally, I have thought of using cargo-net for different purposes
(I have two computers and a router at home, bridged into my work place
via ISDN; only one computer is operational right now, so my network
has two nodes).

I might be tempted to just call it ccdr (Cargo, Carlson, Dang, Rye).
It would also be a computer science pun.

What do you think?

I have updated http://www.skypoint.com/members/escargo/csci5110.htm;
please take a look at it.

When you look at the Project Overview list, there is a link for
"Organize Project Team" that connects to my mail log. One of my project
ideas is a program that takes mail archives and makes them convenient
for web access. (I had to hand edit the mail archive to turn it into
HTML; it could be done more automatically.) I would find this useful
myself and I think it would be potentially useful to lots of other people.
The fact that it would be used to help document the project itself is
a big plus.

At least 3 of the 4 of us want Brad Hokanson to join the project.
One thing we haven't determined is how we, as a project team, make
decisions. If it's majority rule, then we have a conclusion. If it
is by concensus, then we still need to hear from Quang-Tuyen.

I would also like to know what else to add to the "Project Members" table.
If any of you have web pages you would like me to link to, let me know
and I will add them.

See you Monday.

Well, from talking to him it sounded like he was definitely interested
in us (if only because I'm possibly even older than he is). We can
only decide to ask him; we can't make him join.

There's still the problem of finding a suitable project team meeting
time. I would like to do everything possible (including setting up
that mailing list, Corey--hint, hint), to allow communication via
e-mail.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm an extension student. I
work at Network Systems and sit in front of my terminal about 7 hours a
day (depending on how many meetings I have). That makes e-mail a prime
way to keep in contact. I can't just casually meet the rest of you
on campus. (I can meet with you on campus, but it takes a bit of
planning.)

Like I have been saying, keeping our mail archive will make generating
our project logs a lot easier.

Okay here is how the mail list works. I send email with a list of
addresses and a list name to someone else who magically creates a list
for us.

The list ends up as
calvin-@dagobah.stwing.upenn.edu

So the first order of business is select a string that we can remember
and identifies us in some way. Second is to determine whether or not
we have a 5th member. This service will be provided from a friend of
a friend so I would like to have the list final before having it set up.

For the string I would like something short and easy to remember, that
is about my only requirement.

For the email addresses.

corey@itlabs.umn.edu
#possibly 5th member here
#an address for David's email archive ????

Is there anything else I'm missing?

If not then lets have some discussion on the name.

Later,
Corey

Corey, if you can get a listserv set up at upenn.edu, I'm impressed.

The e-mail address for Brad Hokanson is hokan001@maroon.tc.umn.edu,
based on his voicemail response. (I tried to call him to invite him
to join us, but he was out of his office.)

The e-mail addresses to go onto the listserv should probably be the
preferred ones out of my table in my project page. (This means changing
some of the data around and changing labels from "Work e-mail" and
"Home e-mail" to "Preferred e-mail" and "Secondary e-mail".)

That was a hint to let me know what addresses you have and what your
preferred one is. (It appears that our team members have anywhere between
one and three valid e-mail addresses.)

I notice that some UofM addresses are @tc.umn.edu and others are
@maroon.tc.umn.edu and @gold.tc.umn.edu. Are these differences important?
I want to get them right.

tc.umn.edu, gold.tc.umn.edu, or maroon.tc.umn.edu are all valid for

I looked at your web page. It looks like it needs a DOCTYPE
declaration at the top of it. When I opened it in my Netscape 3 client
under UNIX, it wasn't formatted at all, just showing up as HTML.

OK, I just checked it out with Windows 95 and MS Internet Explorer 4,
and things did show up. So there is some browser sensitivity issues
involved. How messy.
