Manhattan rolled into its trees one night after being badly shaken by a French scholar on leave from a kiss-and-frisk and – screwed into that pedantic absence – an ibis hung from support wires in a snow-covered Red Cross emergency vehicle. Also – as an extra treat for the kids – several small squares of faux-marble tile, a model of the Brandenburg Gate, and the Eiffel Tower in a glass of warm milk. So- after all - there ARE compensations made by those in power.
