We began the Hebrew Study Group at Temple Israel in the Spring of 2005 out of our shared interest in studying Hebrew. Members range from those who have recently learned the letters to people who have taken Hebrew in college. We are oriented toward Biblical Hebrew, but also range into modern Hebrew and discussions of religious texts. The group provides a way for people interested in learning more Hebrew to share what they already know with others, and in turn learn new things from the group and from our textbook. Since teaching is one of the best ways to learn, we take turns acting as the instructor.
We meet each Saturday, generally in Roitenberg, after Torah Study (and after Dr. Goldman lectures and Service-in-the-Round, when they occur). Our basic text is
The First Hebrew Primer by Simon, Motzkin & Resnikoff.
Bruce Stough may have a couple of the books available for purchase. Otherwise they may be obtained at
Brochin's or Elijah's Cup in Saint Louis Park. We also work on texts from the Tanakh and the liturgy. In a typical meeting, the teacher-of-the-week makes a presentation, we review related exercises from the textbook, and work on a selected Hebrew text.
Our intent is to be open to anyone who is interested in learning more Hebrew, no matter what your background. As long as you have an interest, you qualify! Beyond buying a copy of the textbook, there is no cost.
The contacts for the group are
Bruce Stough and Rich Furman. Please send us an email if you are interested in being included in our mailing list. Anyone who is interested is welcome to come to the meetings. We don't bite.
